| Series Summary |
Volume one of Pandora Hearts begins by introducing us to Oz Vessalius, a 15 year-old boy who is about to have his coming of age ceremony. Unfortunately, the ceremony is interrupted by shinigami who condemn him to a prison known as the Abyss, due to Oz committing a sin he knows nothing about. After entering the dark prison, Oz meets a girl named Alice, a B-Rabbit, or ghost of the Abyss. Together, the duo attempt to escape the prison, regain the lost memories of Alice, and find out what exactly Oz did to be sent to the Abyss. The characters are very engaging, with Oz being very energetic, outgoing and charismatic. One aspect that makes him interesting is his quick acceptance of being sent to the Abyss, which sets him as a character who adapts to situations quickly. Alice is a probably the most intriguing, with her personality ranging from mild seriousness, to sadistic madness. The relationship between the two is fascinating, as Alice views Oz as a tool for her escape from the Abyss. The relationship increases in complexity throughout the volume, resulting in the characters to be very engrossing subjects indeed. The art is beautiful, with detailed backgrounds, great looking character designs, and a unique style to accompany it. The mix of gothic Victorian style architecture, with Lewis Carroll’s creations and many other fantasy elements make this a stunningly presented volume. Volume one of Pandora Hearts is a great start to the series, as it has me practically begging for volume two. Those looking for a series that offers action, comedy, romance, fantasy and adventure in one volume will love this series.
