| Series Summary |
Do not seek the Holy Grail. There are always perils: duplicitous Nazis, crazed albino monks, killer rabbits. For Irel Clark, the peril turns out to be a cannibalistic witch named Lamia who seeks the blood of Jesus to restore her humanity. Rather than the grail itself, Irel finds a bottle, part of a set of five containing the holy blood. After Lamia kills his mentor, an archaeologist, and impales him with one of her oversized swords, Irel drinks the blood to save himself. In retribution for imbibing her cure, Lamia carries him off to use as a food supply. Since he now heals from all wounds, this isn't quite as bad as it sounds—except for the pain and existential horror. The theft of the first chrism bottle unleashes agents looking to find the other four. There was a mysterious group of soldiers who were guarding the church in Glastonbury. The British government thinks they may be terrorists and wants to investigate. The archaeologist's daughter wants to learn what happened to her father. Lamia still wants blood. A girl dressed like a Hot Topic clerk and a Frankenstein's monster are following orders from a priest who is himself bossed around by a young man. Most of the characters are ciphers with mysterious motivations. The focus is on action rather than exposition. It remains to be seen if the story is going to develop into anything or if it will continue as a series of stylish but shallow vignettes. The art has the look of an overexposed photograph, with dramatic blacks and sharp contrast. This volume includes a sneak preview of Laon which has nudity and makes very little sense. Putting in some cultural notes about Glastonbury and the Grail would have been a better use of space.
