| Series Summary |
Happy Boys started out as a television drama. The boys of the title are footmen in a butler cafe known for impeccable service. The manager, aka the butler, even forbids his employees from contact with customers outside of work or improper behavior within three station stops in order to preserve the illusion. The character designs in the manga are recognizable as the actors, and they represent a variety of types with fan appeal: the young, seemingly cold-hearted boy who is actually kind; the one with glasses who pushes himself to be the best; the passionate wanna-be actor; the former host who is a devoted ladies' man; the impulsive, cute one; the gay pātissier. Gay pātissier? That sounds familiar. So how does Happy Boys compare to Antique Bakery? The food porn in Antique Bakery is better, but Happy Boys talks more about tea. Boys has a larger cast, but Bakery has more developed characters. Boys treads well-worn storyboards, while Bakery wasn't afraid to break out of the mold. Happy Boys is a appealing slice of shoujo fan service. It may not have surprises, but it serves up cute boys and charming stories with the same desire to please customers as the boys themselves.
