| Series Summary |
Nana, by mangaka Yazawa Ai, is a shoujo unlike most others. It isn't a story of love at first sight, nor is it an innocent high school romance. “Nana” is the tale of two girls, both 20 years old and with the same name, brought together by chance when they met on a train heading for Tokyo during a storm. Fate seems to encourage their friendship as they meet yet again while searching for a place to stay. Despite their different personalities--a rock band's lead singer and an ordinary girl from the countryside--they become good flatmates.
However, they have one thing in common. They fall in love so hard and fast, it often hurts. As we follow them on their tale we are drawn into a whirlpool of relationships, passionate love and tender moments. Some couples find true love and a lasting relationship, some are merely one-night stands, some are destined lovers torn apart by their pride and life's dreams. This isn't a perfect fairy tale and there are moments that aren't poetic, but Nana is a down-to-earth story about the fast pace of love and opportunities. It addresses serious issues such as the pain of choosing between the dream of a fantasy lifestyle or giving up your future for a baby? Is adultery justified if the two are truly in love? Is love just a physical attraction? I strongly recommend Nana to the more mature shoujo lovers who would like a biting piece of reality to wake them from the dream world of other shoujo mangas.
