| Series Summary |
Serialized in Gekkan Shounen Magazine (Kodansha).
Ryuuroden is mangaka Yoshito Yamahara's version of the Chinese tale, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. What sets this apart from traditional accounts of this era in Chinese history are the two main characters, Masumi and Shirou. High School students on a plane for a class fieldtrip the two are sucked into ancient China when a dragon appears next to the plane. The two land in the middle of a battle between Generals Cao Ren and Lui Bei. Shirou is saved by swordswoman Lian Hua brother, at the cost of his life. But the sacrifice was worth it as Shirou, marked by the Gods by the mole on his forehead, is the Legendary Strategist Dragon. As the story progresses it goes from being simply another alternate universe story to a truly unique manga. Yamahara successfully manages to balance the clash of massive armies with the individual fights waged by the cast of powerful warlords that make up Ryuuroden. Each Warlord is a small army in his own right, which makes for high level battles in the early parts of the manga. Though you may lose track of who is fighting who with the somewhat confusing Chinese names you’ll be paying close attentions to the many fights. By volume three however, our main characters are beginning to grow. Masumi has become the Dragon Princess for Lui Bei’s enemies and is affiliated with a shadowy group of "super-men" bent on mysterious world conquering goals. Shirou by now has mastered the "cloud and body" style of fighting, an ultimate fighting technique capable of defeating all but the strongest opponents. The inevitable conflict building up between Shirou and Masumi, best of friends, and the rulers they support will be well worth reading. Combining Berserk-like battles with awesome martial art fights, Ryuuroden will satisfy any action loving manga readers out there. Well-drawn artwork, fast paced action, a well designed plot and interesting characters only add to the list of reasons why you should stop reading this summary and download it right now.
