The volume starts off at a high school, with Kotoko Aihara, a kindhearted airhead, confessing her love to Naoki Irie, a genius who’s intelligence is rivaled by Light Yagami from Death Note. Unfortunately, she not only gets rejected, but publicly insulted by him, resulting in much hatred between the two. After an earthquake destroys the home that her imbecile father built, the two move in with a close friend of the father…who just so happens to be the father of Naoki. With this, hilarious incidents ensue, as the parents of the high schoolers are hell-bent on getting the two married. The rest of the story is about the developing relationship between the two, due to the embarrassing, if hilarious situations that they themselves, or others, get the two into.

The writing is exceptional, as it’s equipped with plenty of humor, interesting characters and engrossing dialogue. Surprisingly, characters are complex: Kotoko being idiotic, but kindhearted and motivated, unlike Naoki, who’s a genius, but is cold-hearted and lacks any motivation what-so-ever, often putting minimal effort in everything he does.

Art wise, the series hasn’t aged well, since the art lacks detail. However, it is nostalgic for those who have seen and enjoyed the Japanese art style of the early 90’s. Character models look acceptable, but lack charm, detail and polish. Overall, the low point of the volume is definitely the art.

To conclude, Itazura na Kiss fares well with its first volume. Exceptional writing and an interesting, if typical, plot makes this a shoujo worth spending money on. The art does knock it down a few pegs, but that can be improved in later volumes. Those looking for a shoujo with clever writing and funny situations should buy this product.
