After posting PWCW's Kio Shimoku interview earlier, we have discovered an interesting article reported by kotaku, where Japanese police are spot-checking stereotypical otakus
I remember reading in Genshiken that otaku-fashion consists of anything out of fashion. So really, it can be anything. Kotaku, however, has a good list of the stereotypical otaku attributes:
•People wearing camouflage trousers or jackets
•People with chains or keys (hanging off trousers)
•People who look weak
•People wearing a bandana
•People wearing leather
Keep in mind that this is merely a rumour. The police could simply be looking for suspicious characters that have those attributes. However, if you remember one of our older translated articles, "Doujinshi Goes Mainstream!?", it states that the media has regarded the comiket as if it were "a place for a hotbed of criminals" after the Miyazaki Incident. Though, the situation has lightened up in the past few years, that remains as the general viewpoint of otaku in Japan.
