Helen McCarthy posted in her blog Friday that Ed Chavez of Vertical, Inc., announced during her recent panel at Anime Weekend Atlanta that the publisher is planning to translate and publish a number of essays by Osamu Tezuka.

“I think this initiative could be one of the most important developments in the English-language anime and manga industry, and I can’t wait to see the first books,” McCarthy said in her blog.

“Tezuka was a considerable essayist. Between 1950 and 1989 he produced over 500 opinion pieces, ranging from short contributions to whole series of articles like his Seeing, Shooting, Screening series for Kinema Junpo.

“The range of topics he covered was vast. He wrote about movies, animation, comics, music, books, medicine and science, about internationally popular material like US TV series Columbo and The Adventures of Yogi Bear as well as classics of world cinema and literature.”

Tezuka, widely considered the "godfather" of anime, was responsible for such works as Astro Boy, Black Jack, Buddha and Kimba the White Lion.

McCarthy is author of a number of books on anime and manga including 500 Essential Anime Movies, 500 Manga Heroes and Villains, Hayao Miyazaki: Master of Japanese Animation and the forthcoming The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga.
