Do scanlation groups still have a true purpose? Is the licensing of Japanese media such as manga so widespread now that the original mission (to [promote the awareness of Japanese manga, etc.]) has been achieved? For what reason do scanlation groups exist now? Is the job of a scanlator ever over? Is there still a need for the services of the scanlation community as it relates to the official market of acquisitions? What goals should the scanlation community embrace for the future?

(Thank you to forum member, uzbones3, for inspiring this question).
